Keep reading for a quick recap of our webinar or check out the entire recording below to gain a deeper insight.

The Power of Planning With the OGSM Framework

The OGSM in the OGSM framework stands for objectives, goals, strategies and measures. This strategic planning tool gives your business the ability to define clear objectives and then break them down into actionable goals, strategies and measurable outcomes. When you organize your marketing plans with OGSM, it’ll give you clarity, align your team and help you create a roadmap that ensures progress to your overarching business objectives.

Setting Clear Objectives

When you are creating your marketing plan using the OGSM framework, one of the first steps is to create clear, overarching objectives. These objectives guide your entire marketing plan, even if marketing and social media best practices change along the way.

For example, one of your objectives may be to “Use the inbound marketing strategy to increase our revenue by 10 percent.” This high-level focus ensures that your efforts are directed and purposeful. With this, you are less likely to make smaller goals that don’t align with the overarching objectives.

Identifying Your Target Market

Who are you selling to? Who’s your audience? What’s your target market? If you don’t know the answers to these questions, then your marketing efforts might not work, no matter how robust your strategy is.

In our webinar, Margee discussed using personas to help you and your team understand your idea customers’ demographics, goals and pain points. This way, you can tailor your marketing efforts to meet the specific needs of your audience.

Tracking and Measuring Success

Once your goals are identified, blogs are posted and social media posts are published, you need to know if you are on the right track. An integral part of the OGSM framework is tracking, and by identifying key performance indicators (KPIs), you can measure your progress effectively. You may want to have a few KPIs, such as:

The KPIs you develop should align with your chosen objectives. Regularly review your KPIs to ensure the strategies you created are on track or if they need to be adjusted.

Tips for Crafting Your 2025 Marketing Plan

Start With a Review

As John Lennon famously said: “How can I go forward when I don’t know which way I’m facing?” For marketing, you can’t plan for the future without knowing where you currently stand. If you keep on going the same way, your marketing efforts may just become lost in the crowd. Review all of your marketing analytics from last year. Figure out what worked and what didn’t. This will help you set goals and understand what strategies need to be changed.

 Set SMART Goals

There are a few different ways to create goals from your objective. If your objective is to increase brand awareness, your goal could be: “Better social media engagement” While that’s a great goal, what defines “better?” Better could be construed as one more like per post, 10 more comments a week or some other measurement.

Instead, try creating SMART goals. SMART goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. Let’s turn the goal above into a smart goal: “Increase the number of social media followers by 10 percent, comments by 5 percent and shares by 10 percent in the next quarter through strategic campaigns.”

By defining your goal in this way, you and your social media support know how to achieve it, when to achieve it and by what measurements.

Allocate Accountability

You can have well-thought-out objectives, re-assess your starting position and strategies, and create perfect SMART goals and it can still go nowhere unless you have accountability. Who’s in charge of reaching your goals? Ensure each goal and tactic has a designated owner. By doing this, you’re more likely to meet goals. A clearly defined role and responsibilities are great for a proactive and responsible team.

Make Marketing Easy

The OGSM framework is a powerful tool for structuring your ever-evolving marketing plans. Setting clear objectives gives you stability when new trends, different social apps and strategy changes happen. Identifying your target market means you’re always talking to your ideal customer and tracking with KPIs helps you see if you are on the right track.
